What is the name of the style of the knives in that last picture? I remember my dad having some old knife just like those ones in the picture. It even had that little chunk out of the bottom of the blade just above the handle. What are those for?

Good knives are not cheap but neither do you have to break the bank for a good knife. Good steel, ease of sharpening, and holding an edge are my criteria.

What website should I visit that has a list of types of steel/carbon steel and their properties?

Join up at http://www.bladeforums.com/ if you have a knife interest. You'll find all you want to know about knives and then some there.
Plus all the sub forums like ESEE.

A lot of these photos are older collection shots. I have gone through a lot of knives in the past several years. I have culled the collection recently and now I'm down to the ones I use and like the most.

The khukuri is the traditional knife of Nepal. The cutout is called a "cho" It's purpose or symbolism is lost. Even the makers or "kamis" as they are called don't know the true meaning. Some say it represents the hindu symbol of fertility, a cow track, cow horns, etc. Others speculate that it keeps blood on the blade from dripping on to the handle.

The majority of my khuk collection has been passed on. I'm amassing firearms now.

These are a couple shots of my favorite khuks and knives from Himalayan Imports.

This giant bowie was made for Andre the Giant. It was insane.

One I rehandled with osage orange.

    My all time favorite.
