Being able to hear and sing the different intervals is the start... It can be done without using any arms.

then understand what chords sound like... Major, minor, diminished, augmented, adding tones, deleting tones, inversions and how they change your perceptions... Then the modes of the 12-tone systems......

And that's just the 12-tone harmonic stuff until the year 1680 or so......
