I've only got about 6 episodes left in season 2 of The Borgia.

They schedule about 6 weeks for it, so it can be pretty involved. But at this point, they have the entire procedure nailed down and recorded, so its literally follow the chief engineers notes and everything gets done on time. There are only problems when things don't go back where they should or the optical tape encoders get bumped and need to be realigned (those are a PITA to realign, you can literally spend 6 hours making the smallest moves to get it to work).

Haha, thanks! But I think you need a license to ship alcohol.

Again, the observers have procedures written down to realign the mirrors and get the telescope back into operational status, though the observers only have 1 week to get it ready after shutdown. The only hard part is the pointing model (slew to 72 different objects in the sky and take a quick image with the guide camera to see if its optically aligned, if not it makes a small move to correct), there are 5 different procedures that you need to consult when doing one of those.

4 posts in one for brevity? I semi-accept your reasoning in the present threat.

Optical tape encoders? That sounds analog.

I'm thinking about this, and I'm not even sure the US could build one of the large scopes nowadays without seeking help from Germany/Japan/Korea... Do we even have a way to make those big mirrors now?

They're really quite simple, there is a laser that looks for a change in a pattern and it counts. Ours use a gold tape that is wrapped on the moving surface, and then the optical reader looks at tick marks on the tape. It is able to measure VERY small movements, one arcsecond of altitude is barely a few thousandths of an inch on the drive surface, so you really can't see those small moves with the naked eye that well.

I have no idea who makes the mirrors but if you want one, the wait list is 2-3 years. Sometimes, projects will buy out other people in line to get their mirror made much faster, but they typically pay for the other persons mirror as well.
