That should serve well for many many years. Plus, you shouldn't feel the need to upgrade anything right off the bat.

Ha, yea I keep going back between that and a SPS Varmint. Will take me quite a bit longer (couple more months) to get the 5R.

Current thinking was SPS Varmint, get the other gear (perhaps a used 5R HS Precision stock on ebay) and my fundamentals down, then if/when I become a better shooter and can fully take advantage of the 5R, I can upgrade to that, or another rifle.

Oh yea, and if I was truly wanting to get a 5R barrel right off the bat, I could go with a savage for just under $800 (24" 5R, threaded barrel, accustock, accutrigger). Or, the Savage 10 FCP with DBM and ugly digital desert camo stock for $920. Lots of options and I had been bouncing back and forth between Savage 10 and Remington 700. Still haven't fully decided, but since I'm not buying it yet, I've got time.

Ill say it again: buy once, cry once.

dont buy an sps then try to change things about it immediately. Stick with the R700 because everybody makes accessories for it. If you're going to change stocks, then just get a really nice one when you do.

by the time you change things around, you'll be at the same price point as the original 700ss .....

The reasoning for the SPS Varmint was its the same rifle as the 700 Police, but without the HS Precision stock.

700P = $892, 700 SPS-V = $515. Used HS-Precision on ebay is $250-300, puts under the cost of the 700P. But, I was thinking about an AICS eventually, so I might not get the HSPrecision stock on ebay. The other thought was get the 700P, shoot it until I can save for the AICS, then sell the HSPrecision stock and upgrade.

But to be honest, the reason I don't like the 5R is the stainless barrel/action. I do not like stainless guns AT ALL!

Oh yea, and jim, i know, i know, there's a forum for that.
