That's some pretty good news there, Belly.
Nah, it can, but if the sun hits the mirror, it turns into a death laser and seriously damages/melts things. Not kidding. It happened one year when we had the telescope apart for repairs, the sun accidentally hit it and I walked in front of the laser beam and instantly got a sunburn (well, it felt like it) and my body temp rose by about 5-10 degrees. LOL
Death Laser.....frying an ant with a magnifying glass multiplied by a thousand?
More like 100,000. The mirror is multiple times larger in diameter than a magnifying glass, so the effect is squared or something like that.
And if I put a pot of water at the focal plane of the secondary (like using a satellite dish as a solar cooker), I could probably boil 1 gallon of water in a few seconds...
Funny story actually. At another observatory, there was an employee who was fired for some reason. He was pissed off so like any rational person, he grabbed his gun and went to work. Only he didn't shoot people like the trend now is, he shot the telescope.
Interestingly enough, the huge freaking mirror didn't shatter like you'd think. The bullets went right through the glass, and actually released some internal stresses the glass had from manufacturing. After they inspected it and returned it to service, they were getting much higher quality data because the telescope was more relaxed. Pretty cool, eh?
