Sigh, I almost hate having real world experience when taking classes.
In the lab manual for our slot car, the two ends of the rear axle have call outs for "8-32 UNC-2B" threads. For starters, 2B is an INTERNAL thread, so it makes no sense for the wheel to have 8-32 UNC-2B threads, and the axle to have the same thing. That's like trying to screw a nut into a nut. It doesn't work, unless you're sitting down and crush your boys.
Furthermore, the OD of the rear axle is SMALLER than the minimum allowed major diameter of 8-32 UNC-2A (what I assume they meant, being external threads), so again, the rear axle shaft would most likely just slide right through any 8-32 UNC-2A die, or at the very least be threaded so minimally that the thread engagement is pathetic and can barely be called UNC-2.![]()
Sigh, real world problems, nitpicking thread classes...
Well, I spent my entire afternoon replying to emails and attempting to make heads or tails of this lab manual. Its horrible when you correct so many problems (these weren't the only ones) to the instructor/TA and they had no clue. But it does make you feel better knowing that you're the only person who will notice things like that![]()
Sounds like you should be teaching the course!![]()
Funny you should mention that! The lecture instructor (same level of education as me, but with 20yrs industry experience compared to my 3.5yrs) has already stopped asking the class questions and has started looking at me asking me to explain things.
On the other hand, I guarantee the lab instructor (in the machine shop) has MUCH more experience than me, mostly because I've never used a CNC Milling Machine and he's got 3 different kinds in the shop and even a 5-axis CNC Milling Machine![]()
