mcjunior, don't get coolant, carry water and a couple gallons. For backcountry camping, plan 1gal water per person per day but I typically carried an extra 1-3 gal total for vehicle stuff.

If you carry water and you spring a leak, it works (so get RO for that, not spring water). If you carry water and you don't spring a leak, you can drink it to make extra room in vehicle. If you pack coolant and don't spring a leak, you definitely can't drink it to make extra room and you'd be contaminating the environment if you just tossed it out.

Ah, well in that case, just ignore everything I'm spewing because you are obviously way more prepared than I am

Granted, I do have a small BOB I carry with me in all vehicles, it isn't large enough to carry all that much, or I've got too many large ticket items in there (I know I do, just don't have the motivation to go through it lol)

lol I have redundant bags everywhere... So that no matter where I am, I will at least have some basic tools and necessities. This isn't about tin foil or anything like that either... This is about not being totally f*cked if I wreck the car in the middle of nowhere or I get caught in some sort of natural disaster, like the Black Forest Fire, which was less than 2 miles from my home.

It's near the top of the list, but I don't really have the time to learn it right now. If cell phone towers went down for whatever reason, I was probably about to have a lot more trouble than not having a radio, or maybe not.

Different system. All you need to do is set it on one of the 142.xxx frequencies. One of our infrequent board members (rarely post) 0used one up in the ft fun back country for a med emergency. worked where there was no cell svc.

OR visit this forum and thread.

yeah yeah yeah, I know how Ham works. I'm a communications satellite enginerd. I have spent way too much time studying electromagnetic signals, wave physics, frequency bands, modulation types, etc. Like I said, it is near the top of a short list, but it's not in the budget right now. Mrs. HoneyBadger is making a career change with unknown financial changes coming down the pike.

121.5 MHz will be sure to get you some help too. That's the military aviation "mayday" freq.

ETA: they might not be too happy about it, but if you're dying, why not try?
