Although only Silver so I have to wait until check in to move up to E+ seating, I almost always get exit because someone got moved up either 72 hrs prior, or after check-in depending on their status. Then the just-before-flight seating starts to move around with late check-ins and standby, etc. and I can sometimes squeak out something a little better from the app while at the gate. My favorite seat is 7A or 7D (A3xx, 737) right behind F when there's a shortened bulkhead and front floor storage.
I'm not even making silver going into 2015, 3k miles short and I don't want to pay $350 to make the cheapest miles run I could find (Miami.) I'll use a new UA mileage plus card to keep priority 2 boarding, and pay out of pocket for plus until I get Silver back. I'm picking up 50k award miles for a small spend on the card, and two free club passes per year, so it's a decent deal to keep me out of the kettle line.
Already have two known trips east for January, and possibly a third, so I will probably make Silver again mid year like I usually do. I normally either hit segments or do 30-40K, always short for Gold. One of those upcoming trips (Raleigh) should have been in 2014 and got pushed so I'm kinda bummed about that one causing my status loss and zero chance of upgrading into F which is the biggest pisser about losing status even though it's kinda rare. I got upgraded to F for 5 segments in 2014.
I considered switching to AA for 2015 but UA is still going to work better for me for the time being, even with their RDM changes going to revenue like Delta.
