Can't you just use an app to hear where ever you want?

There are a few websites that offer listening to that kind of traffic. That also depends on your connectivity level wherever you're at. If you have an actual radio, I don't see that being an issue.

I'm also not a phone whore, I hate the damn thing actually.

I really would like to start looking into HAM stuff, I'll get to it some damn day I suppose.

No. First it was trunking, which made almost all scanners obsolete.

Now they are encrypting, and that's like a death shot into understanding (scanning) your immediate vicinity.

Another aspect to just listening to a zip code assigned App...is you get to hear a lot of stupid shit like parks and rec, public works, and the like. The lock out aspects in the scanner make that go away....perhaps the phone app does as well? Dunno.

Didn't know if you saw this in my post...
They've been trunked for a long while now, but yes, encryption starts in a couple of weeks.

Don't worry, you can always log onto your local Nextdoor website and sift through all the "What's happening at ________? Tons of COPS!" threads.

I don't think I'd have the time for that after looking for midget hookers, honestly.
