    Is there such a thing as a socket with a round base, or is this another "custom" tool that my grandfather made?

    What are the markings on it? Maybe he used it to seat bearings.

    More than likely used for bearing installs. Or he needed that size to press a sleeve in to a race, or pipe. With those old mc projects he had. Possibly used for pressing bushing in to shifter, cam and chain covers.

    Must be a custom job. I'll stick with my original guess of seating bearings, but that's a WAG.

    ETA: 40416 is standard S-K part ID for 3/8" drive deep well 6 point socket.

    custom tool, as others have said, probably used for pressing and not removal of bolts.

    I had a brand new 13mm Snap-On wrench that the box end was just a round hole. Wanted to keep it for a conversation piece but the dealer took it from me to warranty it out.
