    Once you start finding Dusky Grouse or White-tailed Ptarmigan, watch and listen to their clucks and grousing, the feet as they scratch, their wings as they fly. In the future you will recognize it beyond background noise. I'll typically find a half dozen to thirty or more grouse during elk season. I never hunt them during season as it's a distraction from my primary goal. I used to hunt grouse on pre-season conditioning hikes.

    Steven Rinella often describes the call of a Dusky Grouse sounding like a farmer trying to start an old tractor. Pretty sure this would have caught my attention while hunting.
