Hey HoneyBadger, you forced my hand.
Went to lowes and bought the lumber for my reloading bench this morning. Couldn't decide on what type of top I wanted, so I just got the 4x4s and 2x4s and hardware to screw it all together. Options were cheap 3/4" plywood, 3/4" "blondewood" plywood (tropical hardwood that grows fast ie renewable resource) or actual hardwood planks, though the planks would have a seam running down the middle of the bench.
The blondewood splinters easily, the plywood would need to be lacquered or something so I could have a nice smooth surface on top and the hardwood planks are expensive. I tried looking for a slab door but couldn't find any so I decided I'd just get the top later. Supposedly my Lowes carries a slab door for $52, which I originally planned on getting, but none of the employees could find them in the store.
This is what I was going to get: http://www.lowes.com/pd_10804-42734-...r#BVRRWidgetID

Or I could go with a laminate counter top, that might be more what I'm looking for (as an easy to wipe down surface) and a little cheaper...
Laminate counter top it is, $37 for a 30" x 96" slab, which is the perfect size. Might have to head back to Lowes later today and look at the styles/choices... I'm thinking granite/marble print, or maybe leather...
