Also, I am nowhere near a biking expert. I used to ride weekly, but now it's become a monthly or bi-monthly thing with the arrival of Baby HB.

Amazing how quickly cycling trends can change. There is still some lingering debate over which is better, 26 or 29er, and now someone is throwing a "new" wheel size in there again (I still think of them as 650b.) Hard to believe they've been around 5 years now for MTB. I'd be interested to ride one, I made the switch to 29er in 2008 and love the speed and ease of clearing obstacles, but I still haven't gotten used to the turning radius. Which is probably why I ride the road bike so much more. If I only road cross country and stayed out of the technical trails around the state I might not have issue with my 29er but I love tight technical singletrack, speaking of which I think I need a trip to CB soon.

As far as hardtail v. full squish, it takes a good test ride to determine which you really like better. Some bike shops will allow extended tests (sign it out on a Saturday morning and bring back Sunday afternoon) or a rental option to make sure you like it where you will ride it. Don't hesitate to put the screws to your LBS to get what you need to make a decision.
