If everyone in The Walking Dead is already infected, why do they still chop off limbs when people get bitten? Should they just stop the bleeding and prevent the person from DYING from said bite? Or is there some other infection (not the zombie one) that would kill them?

I'm a big fan of the show, and I don't have a solid answer on that for you. My take is that if you get bitten, that's the catalyst that sets the infection in motion...and you become Zombie.

I dunno.

Sepsis. The blood, saliva, etc from the zombies is decomposing and full of bacteria, and would be a very imminent threat to the living's health.
