Hey HB, one thing you might want to consider taking along is a spare gas tank with gas (1-5gal), several gallons of water and some oil.
If something happens even on the smooth trails, if you start losing fluids (gas, coolant, oil) in the vehicle, you're hosed.
And....eat your heart out waxy...the Santiago's by my house finally opened. Christened it with Deluxe burritos and chicharones.
Yummo.

Good idea. I haven't come up with a good way to carry a few extra gallons of gas. In my old truck, I just put a 5gal can in the truck bed and held it in place with rope. In the X, I guess I could put something on the roof, but I don't plan on getting a different roof rack or anything.

I've put a 5gal can in the factory roof basket (the one behind the fairing) and held it down with two ratchet straps. But with an infant, I'd be hesitant to put it in the cab (as I'm sure you already thought of). Probably can't be good for HB Jr to breathe those fumes.
Another idea is a hatchet/axe. If you get stuck in snow/ice, you can use the hatchet/axe to cut down small pine trees to put under your tires for traction. My X is fully self sufficient should I ever get stuck and only had to recover myself once.

Yay looks like we got ourselves a vacation! 2 nights up in a "cabin" in/near cripple creek! Ice sculptures for the kiddos. Anyone know of any cool man stuff around those parts?
Good reminder BC. I gotta get some coolant and oil, can't think of a good way to store gas. No roof racks on my cr-v. The only downfall. Maybe tax return purchase. First vacation in 2years!
As I drive to work, (assuming ideal environmental conditions) I could survive out of my X for more than a week if anything were to happen. Hatchet, machete, survival saw, food, water, warm clothes, navigation and signaling devices, etc. Any time I plan to drive in the mountains, or in uncertain conditions, I grab my bug out bag (which can hold me over indefinitely in anything other than The Day After Tomorrow conditions) and some extra water and seasonal gear.
My wife calls me nuts all the time because I'm afraid to go hiking with HB Jr, in case something should happen to him..![]()

As I just said in post 48353, I'm a little paranoid about it all... I basically pack to go camping anyway, so then I can drive around worry free. I will do everything in my power to avoid any situation that could seriously endanger myself or HB Jr... I mostly stayed on the trails![]()
