Yesterday was a rough one. I'm a member of the 501st Legion with a sith lord from the old republic timeline costume and I'm putting together a sand trooper costume (the storm troopers from Tatooine) and we got an urgent request on Friday evening to head to Children's Hospital for a 2 1/2 year old boy who had a kidney tumor that went from 3 cm to 6 cm in 26 hours and had to have it removed. Since we couldn't find a storm trooper available on such short notice who could hasn't been sick in the last two weeks I put on my 95% complete trooper costume and went. During the post op CT scan they found spots on his lungs. So since him and his dad both love Star Wars they asked us to send people to visit him. Due to health restrictions on the oncology floor we couldn't go up in our costumes so they brought him down in a wagon to visit us. His first reactions since his surgery were smiling at Darth Vader and the R2 droid unit we had along. We were able to mobilize 8 in costume troopers plus the droid and operator to make the visit and he had enough pictures with us his grandmother filled up a digital camera memory card. By the end of his visit even the dad and grandpa had tears streaming. After he had to go back up we got about 40 more kids down from their floors to visit and get pics taken in about an hour. Usually after a troop we're all smiles when we can help kids brighten their day, but this one really got to everyone there. I still did the afternoon session of Brickfest in my sith costume I had previously committed to, but I mostly just stayed next to our backdrop and let people take pics.
Wow, Dave. That certainly would be rough.
Good on you, Brother. Thanks for doing that.
