If I right-click the image and select "copy image URL" (using Chrome) and use that in the board post editor "insert image" and uncheck the "retrieve remote file...", it works.

Brutal, Google recently changed from accessing photos inside Google+, to accessing photos through Google Photos. I was reading reviews and people were complaining about not having the same functionality as before. The way you described was how I've always hot linked images before, but it wasn't working the other day. They must have fixed it. Thanks for noticing, as I was pretty frustrated.
