    What's the point of the tandem rear axle? Troops don't weigh that much and they aren't doing no knocks at the top of an off road trail. Is it just to have more tires in case of a flat?

    That armor has to be heavy. (That ranks high on the list of dumbest statements I’ve posted lately). Maybe tandem for redundancy, so if a rear tire is blown, it can still limp away? Or maybe armor is just heavy.

    An MRAP’s empty weight is 14 - 18 tons depending on configuration. I would assume that is a good enough reason for tandem duallys

    Well, if your budget gives you X tax dollars to spend and you don’t spend them all, you get a budget cut next year. So you better add some tires to use up the tax dollars, maybe even go into the red so you get a bigger budget next year.
