    Default Headed Out To Chaffee

A buddy from work and I are heading down to Chaffee to check it out. We might stop on a pond or two on the way. Just thought I'd throw it out there if anyone else is thinking about going.

Hands down, it was the best range day I've ever had. I've never had an opportunity to shoot at that kind of distance, or at that nice of a facility. After tagging the 1,000 yard target I'm pretty much hooked. It's hard to believe it's free to the public.

This is about to get expensive. Anyone want to help me get started reloading?

    I figured you'd like it.

Easily the best facility that I've ever been to as well.

And the fact that its free is all the better.

I just wish that I didnt have to drive 2 hours to get there.....

Yesterday I was shooting a Remington 700 .308 SPS Tactical I picked up from a buddy a couple of months ago. He had only ran 40 rounds through it and then put it away in the closet. It even came with the original box, paperwork, etc. For glass it has a 20x fixed power Super Sniper. I know it isn't a Night Force, Mk IV, S & B, or any of the high end scopes, but it hasn't had any problem shooting .5 +/- MOA all day long. For a $300 scope I can't knock it at all.

I've been testing different factory ammo at 100 yards here at the local range in Leadville, and I can't believe how good this thing shoots for a box stock rifle. With my Shooter ballistics app on my Android and real world data from my Chrony, it really wasn't too difficult to get it on target out at Chaffee, but it sure was fun!

This weekend I'll be back in Texas and I'm hoping to work up some handloads to try when I get back next week. Hopefully I'll load a couple hundred, so I can do some more testing. Next time I'll be sure to bring a spotting scope with me.

I'm still shocked that the Chaffee range is free to the public. Good job Colorado!

Had a a SPS Tactical for a while, great rifle for the money.

43.5 Varget and 168SMK or 168Amax shot well in my rifle.

I'm glad you all like our range, we are pretty proud of it.

It isn't exactly free though. The locals donate to it as does the Friends of the NRA. Bill N. does a ton of work out there on his own dime and time. Many of us locals will pick up trash when we are out there. If your ever down to Salida, American Hunting and Fishing Supply has the donation bucket. AHFS also has lots of ammo, targets, guns and anything else you need. Lawrence usually has the best prices to boot. He is located accross from the Patio Pancake out on the highway best breakfast in town. The german sausage is awesome BTW.

Let me not forget to mention the Chaffee County dump people for doing the dirt work, DOW for the annual range fix up and quite a bit of money also. Butala construction donates or sells at cost a lot of the gravel used out there and Hylton lumber gives and sells at cost much of the backing board and other supplies used out there too. But the biggest Thanks goes to Bill for all his work.

Please enjoy the range, but don't tell to many people. Right now we are at a good level of use. Not enough people using the range to make it not fun or unsafe but enough to keep the idiots in check. We residents know we are lucky to have the range and want to keep it nice. I live 10 minutes away so I can go before or after work or anytime for that matter.

    Enjoy!

I can't take any credit for it. I was still on Active Duty when the range was built. BTW the range just got another 10 year lease signed.

They are putting in a covered shooting position at one of the upper pistol ranges and are expanding the rifle range to I believe 14 positions, some are covered, and a couple will not have any benches for prone shooting. Earlier this year the shotgun range was expanded and improved.
