    Default in car carry

i do not have a cwp. i travel with my job frequently and many times i find myself staying in un pleasant areas, so i do want a pistol in my hotel rooms w/me at night. this is in oregon and washington, im sure the laws vary slightly from state to state. what i am doing is using a cable lock to lock it to the inside of the trunk through the action, ammo is packed inside suitcase. obviously not easily accessable/usable.

now i have been pulled over a few times with many guns in the trunk unlocked. BUT thats on my way to/from shooting or buying/selling. each time i have said first off- i want to let you know that i am on my way to/from shooting and i have unloaded guns in the trunk. once was with 2 aks, a hk .308 copy and a ar15. no problems. but im wondering how different it is if im carrying it for defense while traveling.

anyone know the rules on this?

I think I understand what you are asking,

First, I do not tell anyone, if I am pulled over, that I have weapons in the trunk. If they are in the trunk, then there is no threat.

As far as a handgun in the car goes, for protection while driving? In Colorado it is no problem, the law in CO specifically addresses that. Out side of CO, you may have a problem.

http://www.packing.org/ is probably the single one source of accurate info on the web.

IMHO.. don't tell anyone anything and don't agree to anything.
Know and appreciate your rights. Make LEO do their job.
If they don't have PC, they'll ask to search X, make them get a search warrant.

Exactly the advice my brother gave me. He's a police captain in a large midwestern city. You have nothing to gain and if you get a dishonest cop, everything to lose.

If they really want to search your car, they'll find a way. There are many folks that think the drug dogs are trained to "hit" on a non verbal cue from the handler for exactly this reason.

Why not just get a carry permit?

you can carry a loaded handgun conealed in your car for defense.

If i am not mistaken the law about having a loaded rifle has changed.
It used to be that you could carry it loaded as long as a round wasnt chambered. Now i think it has to be fully unloaded.
But there is no requirement for a lock to be on it, and the ammo dont have to be in a different compartment like a lot of states. As long as its unloaded you can transport it.
I know a couple of peole that carry their AR's and just keep a loaded mag for it accessable.

Hunterco can probably answer this better.

And its easy to get a CCW in colorado i would recommend getting one.
