    interesting.
so it's reverse to the 5.56/223 thing.
That's good to know, I won't shoot anything that I don't know is safe!!!!!! Thanks....

It's the 2A, I didn't see why the 2A1 would be any better to collect. The sight was the only difference that I could tell.

I will get some pics tonight. I need to clean some of the cos off. Gotta love that stale smell.
I am very jealous of you getting a bayonette!!!!!! I want one and can't find it.

Also, do you guys know if any of the local shops sell the 7.62 NATO?

I'm going to stop off at sportsmans on the way home....... crossing my fingers.

    Hey Bailagent100,
where did you get the spirits & nineral oil from & does the oil come boiled?
    I'm assuming Home Depot.....

My understanding is that the rear sights are the only difference between the 2A & the 2A1.

The first 50,000 rifles made in the 7.62x51 chambering utilized the original sights (2000 meters) and were, indeed, calibrated for the .303 round. We may have a bit of a challenge finding the sweet spot with these sights!

After that, they redesigned the sights, calibrating them for the 7.62 NATO (800 yds/meters?) thus the 2A1 designation.

Can't help you with who may carry the milsurp 7.62, locally, but you can order the South African stuff by the 140 round battle pack or 7 bp's (980 rounds) in a crate from www.aimsurplus.com.

I found the odorless mineral spirits and the BLO at a local True Value store. Walmart only had the BLO in 5 gallon buckets. Certainly didn't need that much. Unless you're going to be restoring many rifles, just buy the smallest quantities you can find of each. Like I said before, I used 1/4 cup of each, mixed together...gave the wood 3 coats & still had some left over. A little seems to go a long way.

Did you try Southern Ohio Guns (see earlier post for web-addy) for that bayonet?

For just having this one gun chambered for this round, I went a little crazy & bought two cases...but everybody seems to like it, its quite appropriate for our 2A's & will likely be gone very soon.

Besides, if I decide to pick up an FAL or some such item, I'll have ammo for that then, too.

    Best regards,
    Bailagent100

    Don't do that to me....
I'm SOOOOO close to going down the FN/FAL road. I have found most of the importers selling the kits and the ones making the receivers for them. You allready made me, well pretty much made me, Ok, brought it up, get the 2A.
You're lucky too, if I had my work computer I would post some links to them. I'm figuring about $300 for a completed one.......

I have to say this too, I really think the 2A has the most personality to it's design and looks than any of the other rifles I have. Kind of a Mannlicker type stock that reminds me of my 1892 build Kar 88, coupled to the Enfield receiver/bolt. Pretty neat rifle. This is one that collectors should have. I honestly can say a second one will end up in my vault fairly soon. Probably the 2A1.

    Thanks for the info Marlin.

    Greg

PS, thanks again for the info on the stock stuff.

    I shot mine yesterday

I was "banging the gong" with the irons at 50-75 yards in the snow

I do have one caution on these if any of you get one.
Be very careful taking these down!!!!!!!

Mine looked like it had been dipped in shellack. The stuff literally glued the thing together. It took me three hours to get it mostly taken down and the excess cleaned off. The upper hand guards could be broken if one was not careful when pulling it apart. My receiver was even stuck to the stock.
The black paint is so thick that it looks like an epoxy creasote. I had to shave it off of the bolt retainer clip to get the bolt free. Beyond that, there is a repaired crack in the little hand guard piece that is behind the rear sight. I will have to do some work on it, the crack is still present. All together, the wood is really nice! The more I look at this, the more it becomes my favorite. The "family" even commented on it, they NEVER notice the rifles I'm working on. It's in a tie w/ my 1903 Springfield.

    Hey Marlin,
thanks for the 5280 info. I went by last night, but he had closed early for the holiday....

I went to the North shooting area Saturday afternoon.
They are a little harder to shoot off hand - palming it, but are pretty stable and a joy to shoot.

If you don't have one, get one!!!!!

    Greg
PS, Marlin, did you see my post about 5280 having the .303 in?
I like them in there, nice people.

    Hey 7idl
I had to come back and revisit the .308 vs 7.62x51 thing.
I read the info on the page. Good read and important info on head space.
We are also looking at different chamber sizes too. BUT not much.

Read this link - all the way through as things get posted later in the thread that make a big differance.

    http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showt...threadid=22889

.308 and 7.62 are interchanged by a lot of guys (except CETME owners). I think the tolerances are close enough to not get excited over it.

As you can see, they have a lot of off bbs referances too.
