you also have to consider that we are talking about a very poor country.
I Send the in-laws $100 and they think I am wealthy.
They just got electricity TO their house this year.
Their electricity bill is ~500 php a month (~$11.50 USD)
a couple can retire there in lavish comfort for about $300 a month
?? I don't think that reliability is going to be an issue when the alternative is cave darkness. It's not like they are installing these in hospitals.
There is a cool Colorado company called IDE, out of Lakewood, that makes things like this for poor countries. Their most famous products are a bamboo treadle pump (pumping water down to 7 meters) and a ceramic water filter.
