RONKONKOMA,NY. with a 93 date and serial. it has a thumb hole stock and no bayo. lug per clintons reign of terror.so what do I have here. havent had a chance to shoot it yet. it came from Oregon and was pretty rusty on the exterior. and yes that was the stamping on the receiver for the word sporter.thanx Brian

    Definatly cant beat the price
maybe strip the old finish on and bake a new one on... should make your new/old rifle much more attractive and smoother to the touch

Are you sure that's not an AK? SKSs generally didn't come with thumbhole stocks and the bayonets are permenantly attached. It sounds to me like you got a mak-90. If so then you did really well 8). Now show us some pics.

keep in mind after the import ban (not the crime bill of 94 but 89) chi-com sks were allowed into this country BUT the bayonet was removed prior to distribution as per ATF. hence all those sks spike bayonets still for sale

they did produce a commercial post-import sks-d (iirc) was called the SKS-M (M for modified just like the chi-com ak's turned into MAK-90's ) that had a thumbhole stock, used ak mags, AND instead of a place to mount the bayonet inbetween the bayo lug it came with a solid block no cut for the bayo to mount to. they did not have that many sold as there was a major issue with slam-fire.. the FP hung up and rocked out the mag. supposedly it was the length of the firing pin but even after taking down the FP it still did it if not light primer strikes.
some said it was due to not taking down the bolt assy and getting all the grease out of the FP hole. but that was not a fix and life went on.
i would suggest if you do chamber a round
    1) follow the charging handle to battery
    2) only 1 round in the mag
    3) do it pointed towards a known backstop
    4) DON'T DO IT AT HOME

i'd take it off your hands for a reasonable price prior to you restoring it.

It sounds like he has an SKS M on his hands.

I have an M that has a 16" barrel, monte carlo stock, no bay lug, no stripper clip slot, etc.

I paid $325 for mine 18 months ago.

That is the first I have ever heard of sales being low because of a slam-fire problem. I personally have never had a problem with mine.

    Nice pick up!

sorry it has taken me so long to get back, went to Ok. for a neice's wedding. I have cleaned it up and it was just a light suface rust the bluing looks pretty good.still havent fired it. sks-m hmmm! what is the m for?.I wouldnt call it a monte carlo stock but it is straight with a slight bump on the comb. think I'll have some fun with it. hopefully no slam fires but that is kind of cool if it does  [postal] [postal] [postal]

    M is for Modified.
    regarding the slamfire issue
don't know about 3-4 years ago and the used condition you purchased your's in .but when they hit the states prior to 89 they did have issues and the US distributors were replacing any sks's that had the issue. i had one and after 1/2 a mag it started dumping 2-3 round burst. neat but not worth the hassle. dealer took it back and gave me a nice milled norinco ak in its place!
