Thread: Ethical Hunting

This is one of the main reasons I don't hunt these days. Too many morons out there shooting at anything that moves. They honestly think that if they can see it, they can hit it. What's worse is that they don't even pay attention to what they see.

I was just in the sticks one day with a friend. We were just out shooting, not even hunting, when this "Friend" takes a shot at a rabbet with a .22LR and just managed to punch a hole in the little bugger's ear. I grabbed the pistol, (my pistol), out of his hand and asked him what the hell he thought he was doing. The rabbit was over 30 yards away and running when he shot. Just stupid! And this guy hunts on a regular basis. I don't want to be within 2 miles of this jerk during hunting season.

"One Shot, One Kill" or don't bother shooting!

I've heard that phrase repeated many times by my ex-father-in-law.

As with "bump firing", I finally had to ask someone to explain to me what the phrase meant.

Please tell me what a sound shot and bump firing is. I've never heard those terms before this thread.

It's the same in any sport. There are a bunch of dumb people doing dumb things. When I was in Kalifornia I surfed almost every day. The key was knowing your limit. In this case, if you overstep your limit, an animal is injured. in most of the sports I do or did, if you got out of line, you were injured or killed. Case in point where I was the dumba$$:
I went out on a 8 foot day with steep waves on a 10' noserider. I was a liitle out of my league with the size of the wave (8' wave is a 16' face) but I had the completely wrong board AND I KNEW IT! I went anyway. Dropped in on a wave and it started closing out. Instead of bailing I tucked into the tube and went for a ride in the washing machine. I almost broke my neck and could have easily drowned. The sad part is I knew I was in the wrong and did it anyway. I know several people who have been killed stepping out and at a certain point they deserved it. I am sure the AHole who took a shot at the doe knew it was a long shot, but figured what the heck. It's not my butt on the line. The lack of accountability is what bothers me about the story of the mercy killing.

    Mike,
A “sound” shot is just what the name implies.
Hear ANY “sound” take a shot at it.

A little story about how I learned what it meant.

Long time ago we were hunting up around Steamboat. One night we decided to have dinner in town. We were just finishing up our meal when a fairly large group of half drunk, OBNOXIOUS, loudmouth, out-of-state, a$$holes came in. (Knew they were from out of state, because they had said they were) Couldn’t help but overhear them bragging about how many “sound” shots they got that day. Did I mention that they were LOUD.

We were ready to leave anyway, so when I got up from our table, I went over to theirs. I asked them. “What the h**l a sound shot was?” They told me if they heard ANYTHING, they would take a shot, then go see if they hit something. I was SO pi$$ed that I started screaming and yelling at them right there in the restaurant. I was making all kinds of threats about what I wanted to do to them right there, much less what I would do to them if I found them in the field. My two buddies had to literally pick me up, one on each arm, and carry me out of there kicking and screaming. Good thing they had already paid the bill.

I quit hunting for over 2 decades because of this. Took hunting up again for a while, but now I don’t hunt for different reasons.

Bump firing. The practice of letting the “recoil” move the gun back and forth against a “ridged” finger to simulate full auto fire. You need a LARGE backstop, as the accuracy when doing this, leaves a LOT to be desired.

(OK, someone chime in here and say that they can bump-fire their AR-15 into a 2” hole at 100 yards)

I'm wondering if this "sound shot" thing is something they just make up to freak out the locals?

It's incredible that someone could be so stupid as to sound fire. I would hope it is just a story to fire up the locals.

I've seen some stupid things during all the years I've hunted but that takes the cake.

In the 27 years I'd spent teaching small arms for the Air Force, I always stressed to my students the absolute necessity to "Possitivily Identify" your target before engaging! This is a must!

It is reckless and criminal behaviour to be "sound shooting" or "Bump shooting." Yet another reason why I don't hunt these days. Way too many half-trained idiots running around with their heads so far up their a$$ they haven't seen daylight in years.

It'd be great if they'd let us Hunt those morons!
