I was scouting unit 8 on monday. Didn't see any real fresh sign or deer or elk for that matter. All summer long I saw mule deer up there, but nothing when it counts.
I'll be scouting 7 and 8 this Friday. Will let you know what we find.
Do some scouting from home on Google Earth and topo maps. Look for pockets in timber on Google Earth. Dark timbered areas with saddle escape routes. Water access. If the weather stays warm, ie 40s and 50s, check all north facing slopes.
On topographic map, find benches again on north facing slopes.
If you have a GPS, take it hunting with you. Mark waypoints of trails particularly crossing streams, wallows, mineral licks, small grassy areas surrounded by dark timber with bedding sights, well used saddles, etc. Mark these on a saved Google Earth, or topo map for future reference.
Don't spend too much time scouting. You will only have a tendency of moving the game out of the area.
Walk a lot. Shoot once. Then the work starts.
Best of luck.
I ran across these guys when I was out yesterday
Nice pics!! I can't wait to get up there next Friday!!
Mom and baby moose seen at 8500 feet wednesday at 6pm. Approximately 2-3 miles west of the Pot Belly resturant (closed for now)
No joke. I saw two more groups today. A bull and cow together and another group of what looked like 4 cows and 2 juvi males. I think I need to start putting in for a moose license.
Oh sorry. As for elk, I only saw some tracks.
