    Default Rust in my Barrel!

ok well i guess i didnt do the best job cleaning after shooting some corrosive ammo outa my mosin nagant... i see some rust in the rifling of the barrel, not to bad... dont think any major pitting....

Whats teh best cleaner for it? I've got some hoppes #9 and oil and a bunch of cleaning lubricants... Whats the best to use to clean that, and how much oil should i put in the barrels in the future? Will it be badly damaged? It looks like it's only been rusting for a week or so... i'm gonna clean it tomorrow so quick replys would be appriciated.

    Thanks

My first guess would be that it's not rust it's copper MP pro 7 or Shooters Choice work well for copper and lead fouling.

    I've never shot corrosive ammo.

    But....

I've read that what makes it "corrosive" is simply salt, so you need something water-based to dissolve it. Not petroleum-based.

    Supposedly Windex is especially good.

Some black powder shooters swear by windex with vinager.

I use lots of warm water with some soap added for an emulsifier. Then swab the barrel dry, then proceed to clean it.

HunterCO's idea of it being copper is worth investigating also, as some of the surplus stuff i've seen is copper washed.

Windex. The ammonia will neutralize the corrosive salts left in the bore.

I'd follow the windex with something to get rid of the water like wd40, then your favorite gun lube.

K well i just got done cleaning all my bolt action long guns and my new Dragunov of it's cosmoline >

Anyways what i did was put windex in them, and than followed it with a brush a few times, that got rid of the rust, than i followed that with hoppes #9 and found massive amounts of carbon in the barrels that i was previously unaware of.... Than i finished it all up with some gun oil and they are squeaky clean now, and you could never tell that the mosin had rust!

PS my dragunov is really nice... very smooth action, seems like all the cosmoline was making the action quite a bit tougher, now it's smooth like butter.

I took some pictures i should have em up shortly
