Seems this is the summer for rehabing axes.

Here are a couple of finished "user" axes. Removed rust, filed nicks out of the blades, cleaned up edges, sharpened and re-hafted.

Beatty Edge Tool Co. broad axe-See above

Kelly Works True Temper Flint Edge, 2.1lbs

Still have about 5 more heads sitting on the bench.

    Where can I get one?
I sell em at my shop Ray. I can get you a price tomorrow. Fiber handle not wood.

A "real" one or a twisted blade version?

For working, I like a fiberglass handle. Foe nostalgia, it's wood.

All three of those axe's have new handles on them. The double bit was my grandpa's father's, so I guess it could potentially be 100 years old; probably closer to 80 though. I've used it to chop at least a cord of wood.

I picked up the blue and orange ones at a garage sale for $5 each. The blue one had some cut off handle that I replaced. The side says Colins Axe Homestead, Lewiston, PA, USA. It is 2 1/4 lbs and I am pretty sure you can get a new one at Ace for the price it cost me to rehandle it. The orange one was just the head and looks pretty old and used. I cleaned it up a little and spray painted it orange. The house I moved into has a crappy axe sharpener hanging on the wall in the garage and it allowed me to get a decent edge on the orange and blue ones.

Ya the wood for collector sake. Sounds like Ray want's one for camping, I have the flat blade.

Any markings on the double bit?

Old Collins' were excellent tools. New Collins is cheap crap from Mexico. You are better off with the pricey wood and rehafting. 2 1/4 pounds puts it in the boys axe range. That's what I grew up using.

There is a marking on the double bit, but I can't read it. I'll look again tonight.
