Default What gun should I buy next.

My promise to myself to not buy any new guns till the beginning of next year is holding strong, but I'm getting close to that time, so....

    What to buy next?

Bolt action to make into an M40-A1 clone (Remington? Savage?)?

    Revolver (.357 or .45acp?)?

1911 (SA Milspec, Kimber, or Taurus?)?

A shotgun that'll actually do clays (double barrel or semi-auto? brand?)?

C&R type rifle? (Garand, Enfield, Mosin, Mauser?)

    Walther P22 or Browning Buckmark?

    AR-15? (m16-a3 style or m4 style?)

If possible, ammo commonality will save some money in the long run, so .45acp, .22lr, .308/7.62NATO, and 12ga of the above (if/where possible) would be good things, with the obvious exception of the C&R rifles. The only thing I can think of that'd combine the above would be a 1911 and .22 adapter kit.

Oh, price limit is TBD. I'm expecting something of a Christmas Bonus, but have no idea what to expect. It's not only the first time it's been done at this site (that I know of), it's the first time I've even heard of such a thing in security.

I don't really want to break $1k up front on anything, but I do understand things like a good scope would probably push the total for the m40 project over the edge.

ETA: DUH forgot AR-15. I've been shooting with all ya'll for a year and a half and I forgot AR-15. Me am smrt.

What about a off caliber 24-26" Precison Long Range Ar-15 in somehing different like 243WSSM or 25 WSSM?

Um, it's expensive enough for me to try to feed my FAL the 7.62 NATO it wants, I don't want to have to buy some really odball cartridge. I can't reload cause I'm in an apartment and they don't want me to have 'splosives. They'd probably deficate masonry if they knew about the 600+ rounds of 7.62mm, 500+ rounds of .45acp, and 1000+ rounds of .22lr I have in my hall closet right now.

Besides, I seriously doubt I'd get much under $1500 if I was gonna go for a dime-destroying tack driver. Not to mention the places I go shooting (North site, South site) wouldn't give me room to stretch it's legs, so to speak.

But, on that subject, check out the cover article in the January07 issue of Guns magazine. Supercustom AR-15 for benchrest. In .222 Rem

ETA: I haven't seen your AR in over a year, and I'm fairly sure Karl doesn't even own one anymore.

Or I can just buy more stuff for my existing guns:

New stock and barrel for the 10/22; more mags for the g21; some Duracoat and more mags for the FAL; a Sportsman's Guide holosight for the m590.....

I haven't owned an AR in about a year now I guess. I voted for a 1911, they're just fun to shoot. Karl.

    I voted AR.
most likely to be hard to get in coming years.
    Easiest to customize, etc
1911's and revolvers will be available for a long time.
Shotguns will be the last to go (despite my utter and contemptable love for a good double gun, DO NOT GO TO BASS PRO SHOPS FINE GUN ROOM, IT'S VERY BAD FOR THE WALLET)

    Get a REAL NICE AR
    MSTN, CMMG, LMT, something.
and lots and lots of magazines.

I hadn't thought of the political BS that may or may not happen in the near future. That does make sense though and puts a definite 'order' to things.

What's the ammo prospects for milsurp (or really cheap new manufacture) 5.56mm?

I know 7.62NATO seems to have all but dried up in the last couple months.

Another consideration: Where to get one? I'd love to give 5280 the sale but they don't take AmEx (I don't blame them, I know how AmEx rapes the stores) and my visa cards don't have much of a limit on them.

Or, should I buy the reciever now locally and buy the rest of the parts online? I know the general feeling is to not build your own the first time but I'm fairly confident in my abilities (took the FAL down to barreled reciever and put it back together correctly, without instructions, twice) and know where to find info if I get stuck.

And of course, still m4 vs m16 style. It seems like everyone has an m4 style AR, but after lugging the FAL around, I'm thinking shorter is better. Definitely 16" barrel, though, cause I don't want to have to deal with a 'permanent' muzzle device.

ETA: You don't have to worry about me in BPS' fine gun room. Most everything I saw in there was more than a car. My AmEx may have a crazy limit on it (that I've never brushed 1/3 of and normally stay below 1/6 of) but they're not crazy enough to give me THAT high of a limit.
