A Loveland Police officer was assaulted while responding to a minor accident Thursday afternoon near Interstate 25 and Crossroads Boulevard.
The officer, whose name was not released, was investigating the accident at about 12:30 p.m. on Crossroads near the off ramp from I-25, when he noticed one of the drivers appeared to be intoxicated, according to a news release from Sgt. Ben Hurr.
Thomas Irvine, 49, who is believed to have rear ended the car in front of him, reached into his truck, grabbed a gun and pointed it at the approaching officer, police said.
The officer disarmed Irvine and a struggle ensued but Irvine pulled out a second gun and pointed it at himself before the officer could detain him.
The officer could not disarm Irvine but kept his hand between the hammer and firing pin to prevent it from firing. Irvine was taken into custody after two additional officers arrived on scene.
The officer was not injured and Irvine was treated for minor injuries at the scene. His blood alcohol content was later found to be more than three times the legal limit of .08.
Irvine was arrested on suspicion of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, prohibited use of a weapon and driving under the influence. He was booked into the Larimer County Detention Center and bond was not set Thursday.
