Default Shooting Practice for SHTF Question...

As I was out at the rifle range the other day practicing shooting from various positions and various distances out to 300 meters. I started to wonder what should I really be practicing, shooting-wise, for a SHTF event?

I know its going to be situation dependent. I know being good with a handgun is going to be important, but what about rifles?

Should I be practicing CQB type shooting up to 100 meters? I do live in an urban environment. I'm pretty good with iron sights up to 300 meters.

But I wonder what should I actually be practicing with that rifle at the range?

Out past 100 meters I'd be working on target identification.

This or closer. House to house would be a real time training exercise.
You should have a few designated shooters for the long range shit. Unless you have a high vantage point, or a good field of fire everything will be H-H, block to block etc.
    YMMV

If you plan to stay put in SHTF then I agree with the others, practice 3-50 meters for house to house and block to block. If you plan to bug out to a more open area like the mountains then you should beef up on long range rifle. No matter what you should practice both if this is what you are planning on, but I would put my money on tactical shooting with a pistol for an urban environment. Definitely practice on moving targets and from odd positions.

Practice everything you can think of to find out what you are already competent with and what you need work on.

The only things that should stop you from trying something are:

    1. Safety considerations.
    2. Imagination.
    3. Money for ammunition.

Work from simple, basics and add variables. Cutting time and adding movement makes even the most basic drills more difficult.

    Be safe.

You can also practice room clearing in your house using airsoft. Great for getting the family on board, even better if you have kids or an OCD spouse for picking up the pellets.

Shooting under stress...all distrances, positions, & weapon types. Who cares if you can do it when you're relaxed on your day off (if preparing for shtf scenarios)? Can you get the same hits in less time when your exhausted (mentally & physically), hungry, cold, etc... 1 meter or 100 meters, fundamentals are fundamentals and how well do you retain them when things aren't perfect?
