CLEANING AFTER SHOOTONG CORROSIVE AMMO

Hi, I have a lot of surplus ammo and I'm going to shoot it.
But I do know they have corrosive powder and
mercury in the primer. This will damage gun if
not cleaned properly.

I'd like to get some feedback from all the members and their wisdom.


Is there is a product that will not only clean the gun. But. Will also neutralize corrosive residue left behind, That is not completly removed after cleaning it. I' like a product that will completly
remove and neutralize the residue left behind.

I've heard thes statments below.

Petroleium solvents will not neutralize it.
windex, soap and water will clean the barrel.
But it will leave a waterd down film that will still rust, frost and pit your barrel. When stored for a long period of time.

I,d like to ask fellow gun community. If is there a cleaner available
that will clean the corrosive film and not ruin my gun at the same time?

windex with ammonia is what was recommened to me and seems to work well.

cleaning up corrosive ammo is a multistep process..

remove the corrosive material,
then remove the material you just used for the corrosives.


example: use windex to remove the salts, then use your regular cleaning agents to remove the windex and it's residue.

there was a pretty good article in one of the C&R forums that I will link to if I can find it.

I use Slip2000

It cleans lubricates and protects

And neutralizes the corrosive salts at the same time

spray bottle of 50/50 H2O & simple green. take to range or when you get home. spray it on, sit 5 min rinse off, then normal after range cleaning.
for me that's a boresnake. unless i've used my suppressor's then a complete takedown and clean.

Just make sure you get the simple green off any aluminum parts...

Aluminum - Is it safe to use Simple Green on aluminum?
Simple Green products have been successfully and safely used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: Aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green or Crystal Simple Green can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times of All-Purpose Simple Green and Crystal Simple Green with unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green/Crystal Simple Green residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation.
