    Default NEED A SCOPE!

hey this i started thread about this but i wanted to start it in the right place here. i need a scope for my bushmaster xm15es2, it has a 24" stainless heavy barrel. i have about 200 or so dollars to spend maybe 300 it just sorta depends on how much i sweet talk my wife, hehe.

i want something that can get out to clearly 300 yards.
Does anyone have any info about those holographic scopes and how far they zoom too? Or how far those red dot scopes zoom to.
I appretiate any info and you guy's time too. and thanks again for letting me join your forums. i hope to really learn some shit and contribute as much as i can. oh i am a union electrician so if anyone has any electrical questions hit me up, i'll try not to have you burn your house down.

Welcome to the fun.. oh and the forum!

OK seeing as no one else has replied, I'll add my limited knowing...

    1. Most Red Dots and Holo Sights of any quality are going to run 100-300 more than you've listed as available funding. By quality I'm talking about the two big boys in the Red Dot and Holo arena which are AimPoint and EOTech. ACOG is well and away from your price range by several hundred more dollars than the other two.

    2. I'm not totally sure, but I'm pretty sure that both of those have no additional magnification without an add on piece that costs about as much as the optic itself... pretty sure.

    3. If you're simply looking to get out to 300yrds and don't want a large optic, try one of the lower powered fixed mag optics. Nikon, Burris, Bushnell all have contenders there. This is a huge market so those three aren't the only contenders.

I know that with the way I shoot, both of those are really only of any value at the sub-100m ranges, but that's me... if I need to go further I either use the Iron Sights or switch weapons.

Now some other fun notes.... you have the ES2 so if I'm remembering this correctly it's an A2 style upper with the perm attached carry handle. That means having an optic that is mounted there. You'd want to get a Picatinny rail that mounts to the carry handle.. those are fairly inexpensive. You'd want low rings, quick detach most likely as well. Then you're also looking at some sort of cheek rest as well. Again, a lot of options, take your pick and they won't break the bank.

There is always the classic scope for AR's.. someone will have to remember what they are called, but they are magnified but something like 4x if I remember right, come with a mount and work rather well from my experience.

Was there a reason why you wanted to look at the Holo and Red Dot's verses a traditional optic?

    Hope that helps..

here is what my xm15 looks like it already has the picitanny rails, and no handle, "http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/pcwvms24-ss9.asp"
actually i dont think it looks like that one but i think it is that one, the pawn shop guy i bought it from had it marked for 1200, bucks and was onsale this last month for 1000, bucks i walked in with cash and he sold it to me for $750. i think i got a pretty good deal.

as far as the red dot i dont really know anything about them and a friend suggested a holographic sight/ scope, and again i havent had any experience with that sort of optic either, and like you pointed out BADSHOT, i had a idea that they were both out of my price range.
Do you have any specific suggestions for a quality optic that will get out to about 300 yards for around 300 bucks, be specific please. thanks again. i look forward to reading any replies.

Sorry, just couldn't look it (your exact rifle) up at work, so I was guessing based on the ES2 part of the name, I have a XM15E2 that is a A2 style upper receiver.... see assumption gets me in trouble again

hmm.. tons of options and I think that something like the Super Sniper 10x, Burris 3200 Elite 10x fits the bill IMHO.. Nikon, Bushnell or Berska (SP?) - not a customer so I don't know models - are others positive comments about.

I use a 3200 Elite on my 20" AR and it's a solid optic. I pulled if off of my Remmy 700 and replaced that with a SS 16x. Both are around 300 w/out rings.

I really didn't mean to sound critical about the funding range..

You can always shop around a few places, here are a few that I check when shopping...

    www.swfa.com

www.snipershide.com - forums - I bought both the SS and Burris there.

    www.opticsplanet.com

    www.midwayusa.com
    Hope that helps

Cool.. just didn't want to come across as an a$$.

The Burris I have I like. It's a good starter optic. Don't discount the Super Sniper. You can find them on the boards for good prices if you shop it a bit.

Let us know what you end up with... and don't forget pictures!

oh for sure, i never really figured out how to put pictures up on forums.

I already have an older, but nice 6x-18x burris on my rem 700bdl custom deluxe 22-250, and its been an awsome scope, but recently the cross hairs have sorta turned on the inside slightly, its not the scope but actually something on the inside, it still works but i got to get off my lazy a$$ and send it into them to fix. that 22-250 is like poison to coyotes.
