At least 32 people died today at the hand of a single gunman at Virginia Tech. This is the single most deadly shooting of any kind in US history, much less a school shooting. The previous records were held by the University of Texas shooting in 1966 and of course Columbine in 1999.
As best we know so far, the single gunman chained building doors shut so nobody could escape and then methodically murdered students and faculty classroom by classroom, apparently execution-style. No one had any chance or means to resist or fight back. The motive of the shooter is unknown at this point, but the results of his actions are all too clear.
Some will attempt to point to this incident as a reason for more gun control. However, this man clearly ignored the laws we have that prohibit murder, so why should we believe that he would even notice laws that say he couldn't take a gun onto campus? Those same laws prohibited students, including those who were killed by this madman, from legally carrying concealed weapons on campus. If only one or two students had been armed, it's quite likely that this massacre could have been stopped far earlier than it was.
Last January, HB 1572 died in subcommittee in the Virginia State Legislature. This bill would have allowed legal concealed carry permit holders to carry on campus. I quote from The Roanoke Times article of January 31, 2006:
"Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. 'I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.'"
Well, Larry, I hope you and the students and staff that died today "felt safe" after being barred from defending themselves on your campus. I hope you're happy that those evil guns were removed from campus, even though that's what it takes to stop an armed shooter. I hope you realize that the only people who obeyed your anti-gun campus laws are the innocent folks who were murdered in cold blood today.
Folks, this cannot be allowed. Don't let the mainstream media fool you into thinking that this crime today could have been prevented by more gun control. The only way it could have been stopped earlier than it was is if students, possibly like you and me, were allowed the means to defend themselves on campus. The only real option the people who were locked in their classrooms with the gunman had was to kneel down and hope that he didn't shoot them. This is unacceptable. Push for freedom to protect yourself on campus and everywhere else, because sometimes you are your last line of defense.
Repost this if you believe in the right of those who died today to defend themselves.
