I made my living planning the removal of these facilities previous to my current employment.

Purchase price may be cheap but I'm pretty sure the federal government requires you to have the cost for removal set aside upon purchase. I'd set aside roughly 2 million for that one. I spent a bit of time thinking about it and I'd be willing to bet that most companies would give platforms away only to take away their removal liability.

The sad part is that the government requires them to be completely removed. Most of these platforms have been there for 20+ years, and are well established artificial reefs, with excellent fishing, oysters, diving, etc. So what do we do? Blow up the legs with 50-100# charges of C4, pick up all of the big pieces with a crane, then use a specialized trawler to scrape the bottom absolutely clean. TA DAAA, it's like we were never here.

Using wave action and wind power, a small desalination plant, while fishing and shrimping and hauling in a few tons of soil for a garden and a pair of cows up top would make a fairly sustainable hideaway. Coupla .50's on the corners would deter most.
