The levels of signal you will be looking for wont even register on one of those devices unless the broadcast is on your block, or they have a commercial antenna broadcasting for them.
Its a way to start the kid's out to learn and go on to bigger better things.
True the signal will be weak,but it would be usefull for local trafic.
Remember the movie Stalag 13? The guy with one leg with the radio in the pants leg? It was better then nothing.
