OH man, where to start. Let's see, nothing like seeing others downing coronas and shooting clays with pistol gripped shotguns, that's always neat. How about also having a group of nice people just start shooting as my buddy and I are down range setting up targets and then shoot OUR targets after we set them up. It's pretty swell. Just as we had enough, I get a muzzle of another gun almost swept across my face as I was walking by. Had I have not seen it I probably would've gotten whacked with it. Did I mention this happened in one day? Needless to say, place is full of idiots and jackasses. Save yourself the trouble and find another place.

^yep... unless you go early on a weekday when there's no one else there (rare), but that would also require the area to be open to shooting. I've not been keeping up with it's status lately, but the last I heard, all of lefthand was closed to shooting, indefinitely. It started around the fire ban, but I'm not sure it was ever re-opened.

    "avoid it like the plague"

Hmm :/ that seems to be a common answer. But Really dont want to make the 50 mile trip up to Pawnee Natl. Is there really no place that is even kinda ok-ish??

And last I heard the fire ban was lifted

The fire ban has been for the most part, but I'm not sure the "shooting ban" in left-hand canyon has been.

Pretty much anywhere else in the national forest, greater than 150 yards away from any trailheads, campsites, structures, parking areas, etc. It's ok to shoot. Just be sure your target is not a can, bottle, etc. Paper and steel targets designed for target practice are fine. Just don't shoot in to the trunk of a tree by having the paper target on the trunk.... and don't shoot on or across the roads or trails! The trick is finding a place that's secluded enough, but not 50 miles away from home. We all have the same trouble with that it seems!

I'd suggest stopping in at the forest rangers offices (pretty close to where hwy 36 & Broadway meet) and asking them for location suggestions. It's far preferable to having an SUV with a fancy logo on the door pull up ten minutes after you send the first shot at a target.
