Day 64 was the magic number!

Finally got around to the training class. El Paso County CHP applications are by appointment only. I made my appointment yesterday for February 9th (71 days). Afterwards starts the 90 day wait. So ~160 days total. Sometimes procrastinating doesn't pay off.
El Paso County is playing games with "90 days".
I got the renewal package form the Sherriff's office and immediately turned it around.
My check was cashed over a month ago.
Called them this morning because my permit expires this Sunday, October 31st.
I won't get my permit for about another two or more weeks, bringing the number of days to about 110.
Their explanation? "We didn't start processing it until August 13th, and it's up to 90 days from when we start processing it." - that's about two weeks after I sent it in.
So I guess any county can just stop processing permits, and they can delay them forever.*
I'm pretty steamed.
So, word to the wise: DO NOT wait for the Sherriff's packet to arrive, pull the forms yourself from the web page, fill them out and file them 120 days in advance.

*My memory says there was some court case about this, not for CHP permits but for something else. If anyone can think of it, I'd appreciate a pointer.

Follow up:
Later the day I called them, the Sherriff's office called back and the woman said she had just seen my name on one of the cards that was being mailed that day.
Kudos for that!
Card arrived the day before the previous card expired. A bit too close for comfort in my book. I'd still recommend pulling the renewal documents yourself and getting it in early for EL Paso County - they're running right up against the 90 days.

YOU are the first responder. Police, fire and medical are SECOND responders.
When seconds count, the police are mere minutes away...
Gun registration is gun confiscation in slow motion.

Follow-up: Later in the day after my post #173, above, the Sherriff's office called me back to tell me that my permit was being mailed that day. The person I had talked to in the morning happened to have remembered my name and it jogged her memory when she saw it among the permits.
Kudos for her calling. Permit arrived the 30th, the day before my pervious permit expired. Talk about cutting it close.
Still, I stand by my suggestion of getting in your renewal 120 days in advance for El Paso county.

Douglas County - submitted my renewal October 28. Just received my email to pick it up today. 13 days. On top of that they dropped their fee for veterans, so cost was only $13 for the background check.
Yea, the only good thing Spurlock did was drop the fee for Vets. Then championed the red flag law so he can take guns without probable cause.
Cost me $33 total ($13+$5 notary + $15 late fee) cause I stared at the renewal notice on my desk until I forgot about it when I got too busy with work travel and landed in expired carry jail.
They said 4-6 weeks but I'm hoping they turn it around sooner.

Agree on Spurlock. The other cool thing he did was retain the original permit numbers for the first 250 permits handed out by the county. I think 4-6 weeks is there standard estimate for approval. Guessing the volume determines how long. I would guess you’ll have it back before then unless the fact that it expired adds more time. I cannot imagine that would cause it to take much longer.

Larimer reports they're running around 30 days right now.
ETA: Just had a friend that applied in Larimer 2.5 weeks ago, he just got his permit!![]()
