Question How much scope is too much?

So my new Savage MKII bolt action came with a decent 4x scope, but I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to a more powerful one.

Guessing that most small game shots with a .22 LR are probably going to be in the 50-100 yard range, really, do I even need more magnification?

I run a 4-16X on my MK II. It shoots into 1" easily at 100 yards, so a clean kill is possible on a small animal at that range at least. I like lots of magnification, and you can always dial it back if you don't want it.

I've read to zero at 75 yards so you don't over shoot at closer distances. What did you do?

100 yard zero. I have dope every five yards from zero to 200. I dial for elevation rather than holding over, but that requires at least a decent scope with good tracking.

Got a great deal on a nice little used, but not abused Bushnell 3-9x32 today. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see how it does this weekend.

I think a 3-9 is perfect magnification for a stock .22LR... but what do I know?

I have 6.5-20x atop my .22LR and I rarely shoot it past 12x (out to 300yds).

I know that you didn't ask for a recommendation but I will however say that, if I was looking to purchase a new scope for a .22LR, I would seriously consider this one: http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-12x42-Tactic...pe-P53714.aspx

Real Pdogs are bigger than the steel dogs we shoot every month at the WHAC meet. October 20th if, my calendar is right. Cysoto can correct me if I'm wrong. Bring your Savage and scope. Nothing like a little healthy competition out to 225 yards
