Anybody hunt at Barr Lake for waterfowl?
I have never gone out there before, but there are a lot of blinds, hunting on WED and SAT, you can reserve blinds. water level is quite low however.
anyways, I was curious if anyone has hunted out there and had any success
We had a lease out there for geese 15-20 years ago. Never great hunting, but we always walked away with something. The short drive and easy access made up for the mediocre take. Nothing to complain about driving 30 minutes to get a bird maybe two in a few hours.

there are lots of geese. My step dads sister has property out there and I supposedly have access to it if I want to. the only thing I do with geese is cut it into thin strips and dehydrate it into dog treats. the carp of the sky are not on the top food choices when I have elk, deer, pheasant, duck and beef in the freezer!Originally Posted by J

I was 10-15 years old then. Started hunting 5-10 years before that. Before the age restrictions went into effect for hunters safety.
I do remember it well. I miss that spot.
There were tons of geese around. But the huge flocks want a 4 section corn field, or a metric shit ton of decoys to come down. We would put out several hundred decoys in a 1/2sectiob of corn or winter wheat depending on time.... Only got small strays to come in. Watched the hundred+ flocks fly over at 100+ yards up.

I was thinking of Geese hunting down the road. I hunt big game but would like to have more outdoor opportunities. Couple questions: Are the geese mentioned the type that infest golf course and parks in the winter? When you say carp of the sky, is there something bad tasting about them? When is the season?
Either way a hunting is fun and I would love to have more things to do all year long instead of just October-November.
Yeah, those are dark geese. the ones you see infesting golf courses are typically here all year long. Some birds just decide to make a certain place home...like parks and golf courses. Most of them migrate down. You will still see a massive influx in these same areas, but this time of year the skies can be black with birds! this year, due to the drought, anything near water should be pretty good. water and more food near water will bring them to these areas.
As to carp of the sky, I have tried all kinds of ways to gook goose and I just don't like it. I have tried marinating the crap out of it, putting it in stew, steaks, jerky, broil, boil, baking, frying in oil. Just don't like it and I have plenty of other meat to eat. The dogs on the other hand really enjoy it when I dehydrate it into thin strips and it becomes dog treats!
seasons are 9/29-10/15, and 11/17-2/10 this year for where I hunt. There are different flyways, do depending on where you go, the seasons might be a little different.
I'm a huge waterfowl hunter and live in Aurora. Barr Lake is the closest waterfowl hunting you can get to Denver, but have to put up with sky-busting idiots that have probably never hunted waterfowl before.
