Default My first bull (got a buck too).

Got my first bull this year. No trophy in any book but mine. Opening day about 10:30am, glad I didn't pass since I didn't see another on public land the rest of the season. Being my first, he'll be on my wall along with my first buck from a few years ago.

Also got a little buck on second day. Again, glad I didn't pass on him, biggest I saw all week.

Congrats! Pretty cool to fill both tags within two days on public land. Are you doing a shoulder mount? I got my first buck and I'm doing a Euro mount. Kinda wish i would of did a shoulder mount now.

Yeah, shoulder mount. My first buck was $275 for the mount. My first bull is gonna be $675... OUCH! I think I got the family discount (best friend's cousin) on my buck and regular price on my bull though. Doing a euro on the buck in the pic, that's only $75, worth it for me, not having to deal with the brains.

I really lucked out. In the 4 years I have been deer hunting unit 20, I've never seen elk on public land during hunting season. In all honesty I thought I'd get a buck in the first couple days and hunt hard the rest of the week for the bull, that was the plan anyway... It was way too easy.

After hitting our "honey hole" for deer and not seeing much sign, we were driving back to the spot I got my first buck a few years back to walk around. I spotted the herd about 100 yards off the road in a meadow through the aspens (Look close in the pic and you can see the white truck in the background ). Since they weren't nervous, we watched them for a few minutes to find the best bull. I walked up to a mound of dirt to shoot from. As the cows watched me walk closer, my buddy cow called to keep them calm. I thought they'd get spooked and run but they didn't. He turned broad side and gave me the best shot I could have hoped for. The shot spooked the herd and a few ran about 10-20 yards, he turned the opposite way and walked slowly a few steps and stopped. Kept my cross hairs on him, he took another step and I hit him once more on the other side. About another 10-20 seconds went by (which felt like forever) and he tipped forward, face first onto the ground. I almost peed my self I was so happy, I actually had to stop to piss before I walked up to him.

We stayed up there until Friday, hoping to see a bear to fill my final tag and do some rabbit hunting. No luck on the bear but got a few bunnies and tried pine squirrel (those little bastards that alert the whole forest you're there) for the first time. Tasty on the grill but not much meat on the little guys, took a few to make a meal.

Best of luck to the rest of you still up there this weekend. Hopefully the snow coming in pushes more of them down for you guys and the upcoming 4th season hunters!

Congrats on both! Seems you had better luck than most hunters I've talked to. Both animals will be good eating!
