Hunting Knife?

I am looking for a good knife to use when I am hunting deer and elk. I have several small blade knives that work for gutting and fine work but I would like a larger skinner as well. I used a Buck Bantam that I got as a gift to gut, skin, and quarter my elk this year. It worked well, but the handle is camo and every time I set it down I just about lost it. I am leaning towards an Esee in their Venom color just so there is no way to misplace this thing. What are your thoughts on a good standout knife for skinning and using around camp.

I use a kershaw alaskan blade trader, its, light , sharp, cheap and its 3 knifes in one a skining knife with gut hook, bone saw, and a drop point. I got it for free when I sent my ZT scavenger in for warranty and they sent me this knife on accident. only bad part is its made in china

Skinning an elk and not being pissed, usually a minimum of 3 knives for me. Skinning a big bull will kill an edge or two pretty quick.

I've become partial to the Havalon skinning knives. The blades are razors that you change out. I skinned 3 elk on one blade.

I really like the Buck Omni Hunters, but I don't think they make one with an orange grip anymore.

More than that, get a good sharpener and use it often. I broke down and bought a Chef's Choice sharpener and I keep it at the butchering station. Before I go hunting, I make sure all the knifes are sharp. I do all my own butchering and use three or four different knives for that task.

You could find some blaze orange tape and wrap the grip on your Buck Bantam. My buddy had an Outdoor Edge Knife that was pretty damn sharp and it has a blaze orange grip. It was a folder and wasn't too big but it was pretty sharp and I think reasonably cheap. They may have a fixed blade or something larger.

I use a Cold Steel Master Hunter in the discontinued Carbon V steel. This knife holds and edge and is great to use with the Kraton handle. The knife is secure in my hand when cold, wet, hot, or any conditions I've encountered.

I have done gutting and skinning with a couple different knives. I don't like the gerber knives much because I have had bad luck with them. That is one of the reasons I started making knives. Having said that if you like production knives, I would look at Benchmade.
