    Default Hunting License and HE

Has anyone completed HE course online? I just finished mine and they say I have to print 41 pop-quizes but those are silly picture that says "you're right on target"... Any input would be appreciated, would hate to spend an entire day in a class I could teach myself.

I've never heard of such a thing in all my life!!!! Your on your own with that one tsr. Boy have things changed since I took the course. I took it at the Colorado State Patrol Offices at Camp George West in Golden. Mine was at least a 4 or 5 day deal. We had a couple of days in a classroom. There was a gun show sort of day where we could see all the guns the police confiscated. And one day at the Range where we all shot our guns. On a weekend we had to walk through a course, where you crossed over a fence, got in a boat, and pointed your gun at some targets. If you pointed at a target with blaze orange behind it they would flunk you. There was a few other things but I forget what it was, It's been a long time. My number is 000433 I still have the original card they gave me. I took my son down to the CDOW when he was 12 and got his. I think it was a 2 day course. Good luck, I hope you get it.

I have attended Hunters Safety courses in more states than I care to mention, and could teach it myself, but went to the 2 day Colorado one as well a couple of years ago.

It is not just about you, I was able to add some info to the class and the instructor was glad to have someone with my knowledge in the class. As a matter of fact he asked me if I would be interested in getting certified to teach HS classes.

Take a kid with you and enjoy yourself.

I actually had a very knowledgeable guy teach it here in Fort Collins, Paul Gresky.
I really appreciated his down to earth approach.
Here's what he said about the online portion of the class:
(Tip: print each pop quiz question page out before you submit it to be graded. The bulls-eye screen print is not acceptable proof).
If anyone is taking it here in FC, I can't recommend Paul Gresky highly enough.

Several years back I took my daughter to her HE class at CDOW HQ here in Denver. There were several kids there which gave me a bit of hope for the future. Anyhow, the guy teaching it was a bit of a legend - Papa Bear Whitmore. He captivated the kids including my daughter. He was full of stories and anecdotes told in the animated fashion of an indian elder as if we were around a campfire.

He promised them if they paid close attention and scored well on the exam, he'd light a snowball on fire at the end of the course. By God, he did, too. I still regret not taking the followup survival class offered that month. It was the last one he taught before he died.

BTW, if you are as incredulous as I was about the snowball trick, here's the scoop: He took a snowball, a tiny vial of calcium carbide crystals, sprinkled a few in a dimple on the snowball. Wait a few seconds and use a flint to ignite the acetylene gas. When the flame started to flicker, a sprinkle of CC started it up again. He did this until the snowball was almost gone.
