Overview:
The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, planning, implementation, performance tuning, security, backup and business continuity/recovery of enterprise systems. Serves as a technical expert in the area of system administration for complex operating systems. Recommends the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications. Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and develops system specifications. Identifies methods, solutions, and provides technical leadership in order to provide a high level of service to the customers of the department. Engaged in both individual work and project teams.
Responsibilities:
• Manages the day-to-day operations of systems and servers by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair. Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained. Applies revisions to host system firmware and software. Works with vendors to assist support activities.
• Solid working knowledge of network architecture, connectivity and hardware – is an active participant in designing, implementing, monitoring, configuring, troubleshooting and maintaining all aspects of the business’ network topology.
• Develops process, documents, trains and implements generic systems administration requests such as account creation, file system configuration, password resets etc.
• Performs troubleshooting as required. As such, leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations.
• Establishes guidelines and methods for the installation and management of the host computer operating systems, storage solutions, virtualization, and network equipment.
• Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of host computer resources.
• Develops procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
• Develops, implements and manages procedures, programs and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
• Demonstrated strong collaboration skills both with customers, and all members of the Infrastructure team.
• Works closely with the System Architect, both to provide input on technology strategy and implementation but also for guidance on standards of implementation and operation.
• Stays current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways for the business to take advantage of new technology.
• Must be able to travel periodically between local sites.
Qualifications:
Experience/Skill Requirements:
• Five years systems administration experience
• Strong knowledge of computer information systems concepts including network switching, security, software and hardware installation and basic LAN and WAN protocols
• Hands on experience in configuration, building, installation and administration of server hardware.
• Advanced skill supporting either Microsoft server operating systems and/or Redhat Linux
• Working knowledge of network architecture, configuration and topology.
• Possesses analytical problem solving skills
• Ability to assist Systems Architect in conducting needs assessments for existing or new department
• Demonstrated experience with network and attached storage
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to maintain documentation, create flow charts, maintenance records and reports
• Ability to maintain professional working relationships with vendors contacted in the course of integrating, testing, or resolving hardware or software problems.
• Demonstrated focus on customer service and ability to successfully support users with varying levels of technical knowledge
• Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds
Education Requirements:
• Prefer Bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, networking or related field. May be substituted with commensurate experience
• Microsoft, Red Hat certification is desirable
• Must have valid state driver’s license and reliable personal transportation. Will be required to travel to local sites.
