    Default CRC Steel Challenge

As it stands, I will be attending the CRC all steel challenge tomorrow hosted by Mr. Bob Swainson. Match starts at 0900. Not sure if any of you fine folks will be there, but if ya are I'll be running my Glock 23 & my sexy 9mm AR. Look forward to seeing you there!

Give me some details. What sort of firearms do I need to bring? How many rounds? What kind of distances are we talking?

I might be out there in the morning practicing my pumpkin marksmanship skills for an upcoming competition at Lead Valley Range.

If you see a guy that looks like me, stop and say hello. I'll be wearing a CO AR-15 hat.

The match is actually hosted by CRCPS, one of several that we run out there.

Steel Challenge is 8 defined stages with 5 targets on each stage. You run 7 of the stages 5 times keeping your 4 best for score. The 8th is 4 runs, keeping 3. Total round count is 195.

Typical USPSA/IDPA/SASS handgun divisions are recognized for centerfire pistol and each string includes a draw from the holster. .22RF (.22LR only) are also allowed in both pistol and rifle, open and iron sights. Pistol caliber carbines are also allowed (No magnums). .22rf and PCCs shoot from the low ready.

It is $15 to shoot one gun, $5 for second guns. Mil/Juniors/Ladies shoot for $5/gun. About half of the people shoot one division and about half shoot 2 divisions.

The matches have grown and there is a solid following of shooters. It is a great chance to get into competitive shooting, it is inexpensive if you shoot .22rf, it is conducive to those with physical impairments and it has solid benchmarks to which you can compare your scores over time.

The match is scheduled for November 17th. RW could use some extra hands setting up since a few of the regulars will be unable to attend.

Had over 30 people out at CRC for Steel Challenge today.
EricM is probably home trying to drink it off. But sincere thanks to Eric for his help and patience today running the newbie squad with me.

This was the first official Steel Challenge I actually shot. Plus the first for my wife with pistol (2nd ever), the first match ever for my 8 year old and the 4th for my 11 year old. Also had my Dad, 73, along for his first match ever. We also took a couple that are good friends of ours for their first match ever and toss in another first match for another add on to our merry band. All that and NO, we were not the last squad to finish!

Steel Challenge is such a great intorduction to the shooting sports. Anyone can do it and even though it was like 35 and windy, Eric and I got to see a lot of smiles from a bunch of first time shooters that will be back. That's what it is all about folks!

Saturday's match was a great time. I was in Steve L's squad, and we had a fun crew. For me, Steel Challenge is the best way to get a lot of practice shooting transitions, a skill that is lacking in a lot of indoor shooters like myself. I shot 240 rounds of centerfire and 230 rounds of rimfire on Saturday. The format is always the same, so its easy to track your progress over time. Its a lot like running a Classifier match every time you go out. This was my first year competing, and I finished the year with a 24 second improvement in centerfire pistol and a 15 second improvement in rimfire pistol. Steel Challenge complements other disciplines, and I've seen improvement in my IDPA and USPSA scores as a direct result. I'm looking forward to shooting a lot more of these at CRC next year.
