Default LOOKING FOR MEDIUM-LONG RANGE RIFLE CLASS

So, I have taken quite a liking to shoot my bolt rifle several hundred yards away.
So far so good, but I am mostly self (Internet) taught, and I have reached a point where my main issue is reading wind.
I try to rely on electric/electronics as little as possible (IE my ARs all have ONLY iron sights).
I would like to find a class somewhat local that puts the enphasis on "primitive" wind estimation and may help me to correct whatever bad habits I came up with.
On a calm day I hit my gong quite reliably out to 500 yds (that is as far as my range will go), but wind kills me.
    Any suggestion?

Get a wind meter and go shoot in the wind , no real shortcut here other than trigger time and practice .

Chuck is right, just need trigger time! If you want to read a book, this one: http://www.amazon.com/Wind-Book-Rifl.../dp/1581605323 is pretty good. A notebook to keep D.O.P.E. in will help you out also.

You are probably more advanced that many of the people who are teaching these courses locally.

You need to know how much your bullet is going to move with different wind speeds. Get that from ballistic software. Buy a meter and learn to recognize what various speeds of wind do to grass, trees, dust, mirage, etc. Make yourself some wind flags and see how they behave in different winds. Read your wind signs, estimate speed, correct accordingly. Ought to be simple, right?

Especially at longer ranges (like 700+), reading the wind is more witchcraft than science. Shoot something far enough away and the wind will be going four different directions between you and your target along with some vertical component. No go do it in winter when there are no leaves on the trees and grass is short and stiff. You may tire of primitive methods when nothing moves in winds from 0-10mph except the mirage.

Here's a link to the USMC sniping manual. There's a few tidbits in it that might help.

my hair tells me how fast and which way the wind is blowing

I depend a lot on the mirage reading out winds out pass 500 yards.... and I'm usually holing over a half value or more at 500 yards and out further with my .308. The only adjustment I do is for elevation.

It is so much fun putting expensive holes on the ground, but is worth it.. especially shouting "Hit" when you overcome these obstacles.

Enjoy it when your out there figuring sh*t out

you are also reaching the limit of the 556/223 round at 500 yds +
    10mph you can work with
if a flag is totally horizontal ...good luck (15mph+) its windy out here

read the ultimate sniper cover to cover then read it again, not cheap
the old blue army sniper employment manual is decent too and cheap, $6 (section on mirage)

this website offers a pretty good ballistics calculator (there are others)
needed data inputs can be found on ammo manufacturers websits

    http://www.biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx

you dont need a class, save your $ for ammo and good optics or
take it to the next level and learn to reload with good components (nosler manual is good reading too)

spend the time, effort and expense to build yourself a really good and heavy shooting table

if you dont have one already ...you will eventually step up to a ranging reticle of some kind
the humble old school mil-dot is plenty

    have fun

If your new to the rifle and want to start with a good foundation I would recommend an Appleseed Shoot http://www.appleseedinfo.org/ . They have shoots all over the country. A weekend well spent. I was humbled along with some very proficient long range shooters once all the crapcame off the rifle. Kind of like when I was a kid. No scopes, no bipods, electronics, no red dots. Iron sights, a sling and ammo. It is a blast and well worth it.
