    Default Stevens Model 15

Need an opinion. Trying to help a neighbor figure out a good starter 22 for his boys. I mentioned the Cricket 22 but he said they looked at those and they are too small. Then I remembered an old Stevens I had years ago as a kid. So I looked it up on GB. There is only one for sale. The seller is asking $200. Is that a fair price for an old rifle like that? Seems to me they "were" a cheap starter rifle. Or has everything been caught up in the rising tide?
    Thank you

IMO, cheapest decent entry .22lr is the Marlin 795/60 line of rifles. They are brand new in the box, out the door for about $150. Dick's used to have them on sale every month and you could get that down to $120. It may be a while before you see that again.

The next step up and probably the most popular would be the 10/22. I would suggest either keeping an eye out for a deal on a used one or building one from scratch. Many people buy them new only to replace virtually every part on it modding and upgrading. Lots and lots of aftermarket for these things. You can easily build a 10/22 and not have a single Ruger made part.

To answer your question; "No" I do not believe $200 is a fair price for a Stevens 15. I like single shot bolt actions for youth rifles, however, if the boys are already too big for a Cricket, they will quickly tire of a single shot.

    Two boards I would recommend:

Try some coffee in the morning. It may help.

I mentioned Dick's because it once was a place that carried semi-auto .22lr rifles. Then again, there was a time when JC Penney, Western Auto, and a dozen other retail outlets also carried reasonably priced firearms. There is no requirement in the 2nd Amendment that retail stores must sell guns, just as there is no obligation by any citizen to support any business that offends them.

    Back to the Stevens 15...

Thank you for the input. He headed down to the Springs this morning to see if he could find something at the show.

I'd look for a private seller here and elsewhere as much as possible. Any retail sale will require The Wait From Hell. Do some networking - ask here and other boards, friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, etc. Somebody has an unused .22 sitting in a closet.

Update: So he found a guy who has a couple of lightly used Marlin 60s. Now he just has to wait a couple of weeks for the paperwork and the boys will be able to start punching paper and cans.
    Thanks.

Great to hear there will be a few more added to the group. If you get a chance, and your friend is interested, see if he would be willing to take his boys out to an Appleseed. They have an excellent history presentation to go along with the marksmanship training. Once you go, you will want to go again.
