I got my lady an M&P for her birthday and I wanted to have parts of it duracoated. I got one quote for $145 to do the slide, mag bases, trigger and mag release including tear down and reassembly. I am very mechanical and I can paint so I would like to order the duracoat for a mere $25 and do this myself but I'm not sure about taking the gun apart. Do I need special tools? What's involved? I spent some time on google but all I could find was how to field strip it.

Another possible option I thought about was taking it somewhere local to have it disassembled, then I would paint it, and they could put it back together for me. Depending on the price of that, it might just be worth it to ship it off and have it done with.

Finally, do the 17rnd mags for the fullsize fit into the compact? Obviously there would be a gap in the bottom.
