Default In response to the exercise thread (24 hr sniper challenge)...

I saw comments on the 24 hr sniper challenge. I have actually been thinking for a year or so about a way to do an easier, novice friendly form of this here in colorado. Does anyone know if that would really be possible? I have tried to figure out ways of doing a one or two day outing with friends where we backpack in, have a set up place for some shooting, practice a bit with compass and maps, and thats about it. The problem I see is having a spot you can safely shoot. Anyone have any interest or ideas on this matter? It would be fun for some of us to get our feet wet before trying to more hardcore adventure races.

I would definitely be interested in this. Even though it sounds exciting, two big reasons I haven't signed up for that sniper course are that I don't have a lot of trigger time behind my bolt rifle (which isn't anything too special anyway) and the event cost. Something like this would likely be much cheaper and help me learn about long range shooting.

I'm the dipstick training for the full course, and I'd be interested in some practice. I actually plan to do something like you describe as the event gets closer. I'll probably plan to hike to a spot 10 miles in, shoot, and walk out. It would be nice to shoot at steel, but that would require finding a destination that is near enough to a road that you could drive them in ahead of time. Then you have the problem of someone taking them before you got there.

What I'm going to be doing for certain is parking my truck 10 miles from the Pueblo prairie dog matches, walking in, shooting, and walking out. I don't know if I'll be able to find a route that is off road.

BTW, they are offering a sprint course this year. I think 10 miles instead of 30. The cost is still outrageous ($1,000 per team), but it's more accessible to those with less time in their boots. Or girls.

Rifle up to 1,500. Carbine to 500.

The distance harder to setup than the hike. You can park anywhere and hike 10 miles in a zigzag or hike 5 miles past the shoot. In a box around the location etc. Pawnee has 500 easy.

the set up is definitely the hard part, especially in the mountains. pawnee is fine but the terrain is....uninteresting.
