I'm the dipstick training for the full course, and I'd be interested in some practice. I actually plan to do something like you describe as the event gets closer. I'll probably plan to hike to a spot 10 miles in, shoot, and walk out. It would be nice to shoot at steel, but that would require finding a destination that is near enough to a road that you could drive them in ahead of time. Then you have the problem of someone taking them before you got there.
What I'm going to be doing for certain is parking my truck 10 miles from the Pueblo prairie dog matches, walking in, shooting, and walking out. I don't know if I'll be able to find a route that is off road.
BTW, they are offering a sprint course this year. I think 10 miles instead of 30. The cost is still outrageous ($1,000 per team), but it's more accessible to those with less time in their boots. Or girls.
