Hunting with a suppressor

I've been toying with the idea of a suppressor for my hunting gun.

Figure it would add ~9" to the barrel-length and ~1lb to the overall weight of the rifle.

So -- what's a good caliber for elk-sized game that plays well with roughly a 17" barrel?

I keep being drawn to the 284 Winchester for some reason, although I've heard a lot of good things about 7mm WSM in-general.

Well I've got a Omega .30 suppressor that fits my .308, 7.62, and 300 Weatherby, all of which have threaded barrels. I toyed with the idea myself, but the weight factor is a killer.

you really want to take an extra pound with you on what could be a week long hunt hauling it around all day? Not only that, but its not like you are sniping a terrorist up there. You get 1 shot, maybe 2 if you are either lucky or wound it.
Not even close to worth it in my opinion.

Now if you were to get a suppressor to use for a AR or a small caliber rifle for p-dog shooting or coyotes or something you can take in numbers, then it would be worth it, but for a elk....not at all.
